Benefits of Outdoor Play for Early Childhood

Early Learning Landscape Design | Melbourne & Victoria

Why the Outdoor Environment Matters
Play is not a break from learning.  It is how children learn.
The outdoor environment is one of the most powerful tools an early learning facility has, and one of the most underutilised.  A well-designed playspace gives children daily access to nature, physical challenge, sensory experience and the kind of open-ended discovery that no classroom can fully replicate.  It supports cognitive, social, creative and physical development simultaneously, and it does so in a way that children instinctively respond to.
Getting it right requires more than good intentions,  it requires genuine expertise and plant knowledge.

Our Approach
We have been designing early learning landscapes since 2008,  and have been in practice for 25 years.  Over that time, we have developed a deep and practical understanding of what makes these projects succeed, and what causes them to fall short.  We have experience in both groundlevel and multilevel centres.
Early learning landscape design sits at the intersection of regulatory compliance, plant science, spatial design and long-term maintainability.  It demands a level of specialist knowledge that goes well beyond general landscape practice.

Our Principal Ruth Czermak, is a qualified Horticulturist with a Bachelor of Science and an extensive background in the nursery industry.  We understand plants at a scientific level: how they grow, what they need, how they perform in constrained conditions, and which species are genuinely child-safe. This knowledge directly informs every planting decision we make and significantly improves the long-term success of the natural environment we design.  Importantly, it means you do not need to spend hours reviewing plant selection.

The Regulatory Framework
Early learning landscapes in Victoria are governed by a complex and overlapping set of requirements, including the National Quality Framework, the National Construction Code, and the Victorian School Building Authority Building Quality Standards Handbook and its early learning Appendix.  These frameworks set minimum standards for outdoor space, natural environment provision, safety, and the way in which outdoor areas are assessed and certified.
Navigating this framework successfully requires early engagement and a thorough understanding of how design decisions affect compliance outcomes.  We bring that understanding to every project from the first conversation.
As a general guide, an allowance of 10 square metres of outdoor space per child gives the landscape the best opportunity to deliver a genuinely rich and compliant environment, while 7m2 is the legal limit.  Where space is constrained to just 7m2, early design resolution becomes even more critical.

What We Deliver
We work across the full range of early learning project types — new build long day care centres, kindergarten renovations, council-operated facilities and developer-led projects. Whether we are engaged by an architect, a developer, a council or a centre operator, our process is the same: thorough, considered and focused on outcomes that work in practice, not just on paper.
Every project begins with an in-depth consultation. We take the time to understand your site, your service, your priorities and your constraints before any design work begins. This investment at the outset consistently produces better outcomes, fewer surprises and a smoother path through design, documentation and approval.
Our designs are:

  • Based on plant science:  species are selected for their ability to genuinely thrive in the conditions present, not simply to satisfy a planting schedule or Council requirement.  We choose plants to provide a rich learning environment.
  • Designed for long-term performance:  with soil preparation, irrigation and maintenance requirements considered from the earliest stages
  • Compliant by design: with regulatory requirements incorporated throughout the process, not resolved at the end
  • Rich and purposeful:  creating environments where children can genuinely connect with the natural world every day

Working With Us
Our clients come to us because they want the outdoor environment to be done properly. They understand that a well-resolved landscape design is not a cost, it is an investment in the quality, compliance and long-term performance of their facility.

If you are planning a new early learning facility or renovating an existing one, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss your project.
